Volkman retractors (ring handle)
used to pull wound edges back to allow access; (looks like an exclamation point is cut out, Oh Man!, Volkman)
Dissecting Scissor straight
Cutting instrument, goes in closed, then opened to open the space in the tissue to
enhance healing rather than cutting incision cleanly. (If you dissect your sandwich,
you will find mayo in it)

Dressing Forceps - serrated tips
-also called thumb forceps (no teeth-like Grandma when she is still dressing.)
-jaws appear to have vertical serrations at first glance,
but jaws actually have split horizontal serrations to enhance grasping
-used to grasp delicate tissues, organs and vessels
Dressing Forceps
serrated (side is shaped like a capital "A")
Tissue Forceps, 1 x 2 teeth
(Teeth = Tissue)
-jaws have teeth
-jaws have fine diamond-shaped serrations to enhance holding onto skin edge when suturing to close
-used to grasp delicate tissue and skin
For following 2 instruments they are generally called ARTERY FORCEPS
BUT THERE ARE TWO COMMON TYPES OF ARTERY FORCEPS (KELLY, CRILE)
(Kelly) Artery Forceps, Straight
(Note that the serrations do not go all the way. Because Kelly is a good girl.)
(Kelly) Artery Forceps, Curved
(Note that the serrations do not go all the way. Because Kelly is a good girl.)
(Kelly) Artery Forceps close up
(Note that the serrations do not go all the way. Because Kelly is a good girl.) They do on Crile forceps.
(Crile) Artery Forceps, Straight
(Serrations are the whole length of the jaws like a crocodile)
(Crile) Artery Forceps, Curved
(Serrations are the whole length of the jaws like a crocodile)
(Mayo) Towel Clamp
(This is too scary to use on the body, so fortunately it is used to clamp towels, not to be used on a human)
Needle Holder
delicate jaws also called needle driver
Senn Retractor
sharp prongs, double end, used to retract wound edges (looks like a pitchfork >> devil >> sin >> Senn)
Allis Tissue Forceps
4x5 teeth or 5x6 teeth (Has Sister Alice's praying hands with interlocking fingers at the end)
Allis Forceps close up of teeth
(Sister Alice's "fingers" when they are not in praying position)
Sims Uterine Sound
Specialty Probing instrument; (you would not put a Pt. in the Sims position but the Lithotomy position for this to be used. Then tell them to be quiet and make no sound)
(Rampley) Sponge holding forceps
serrated jaws Sponge means gauze, it is for putting gauze in and out of areas to pick up body fluids and drainage. (They have a ring on each side of the jaw.)
-shanks are long with each tip forming an oval
-used for holding sponges securely during prepping or to sponge a wound during surgery
-may be used to grasp non-delicate tissue
Babcock forceps
shaped the same but less traumatic-smoother grasping surface and less tip compression
-each tip forms a half circle when viewed from the side
-used for grasping/holding tissue of the gastrointestinal tract
-may also be used to grasp fallopian tubes, or over a vessel or lymph node to isolate it
"Suction cannula"
-tip has removable cap with hole on end and four holes around the sides
-used to remove fluids from a variety of surgical incisions
-used to remove small amounts of fluid during surgical procedures and can be used for blunt dissection
Gelpi retractor
-self-retaining retraction with an adjustable ratchet look and thumb release
-used to retract heavy tissue such as muscle
balfour abdominal retractor
in its upper three hands with the centre being curved in a way it looks like as if it can hold FOOTBALL
-self-retaining
-self-retaining
-used to retract wound edges and internal organs during abdominal procedures
weitlaner retractor
The jaws looks like the instruments used by farmers in mowing WHEAT LANES.
-self-retaining retractor with an adjustable ratchet lock and thumb release
-self-retaining retractor with an adjustable ratchet lock and thumb release
-used to retract tissue in SHALLOW areas
Army-Navy Retractor
